This week’s Premier League action was more like a scene out of Fight Club or in the WWE than a football match.
It all started with the match at Anfield between Liverpool and Chelsea. The match ended 2-2 but the real action was on the field, where Olivier Giroud decided to plant his studs into Martin Skrtel’s head and leaving him requiring stiches. Talk about stamping your authority on a match and an incident that must have had Brendon Rogers thinking about all the way to Christmas Day even when he chomps on the turkey and all the trimmings.
However, it didn’t prevent Skrtel from putting his head on the line a second time when the stitched up and bandaged Slovakian headed in from a corner in the 97th minute to rescue a draw. At Liverpool, you never walk alone but for a while at least Skrtel will be wearing the Arsenal strikers stud marks. The result leaves Arsenal in 7th place on 26 points but only 5 points off the top four whist Liverpool are 11th with 21 points. A reality check from being top this time last season.
Another bloody mess was at the Tyne and Wear derby match between the Geordies and the Mackems or Newcastle versus Sunderland at St James Park. All throughout the match there were tackles flying in left right and centre but the real moment was when Steven Taylor clashed with a post. The Newcastle defended did his best to get pole-axed when colliding with the post and leaving his face covered in blood and requiring stitches.
Usually it is the Newcastle Manager Alan Pardew who uses his head but on this occasion his defender did it for him. Let’s face it there was certainly no love lost between these two rivals. Ultimately, the match was decided by Adam Johnson who won it for Sunderland with a last gasp winner and usually his feet the appropriately by blasting the ball into the net. A crucial win that lifted the Mackems up to 16th
