They say sometimes in life you should grab life by the balls, and maybe if the England rugby team went by this phrase they might not have narrowly lost out 31-28 in Saturday’s QCE international at Twickenham to South Africa.
It was the season of goodwill in the first 15 minutes of the first half as a poor back pass from Anthony Watson resulted in a penalty for the Springboks, and Danny Care’s pass to a grateful Jan Serfontein for an easy try gave the South Africans a simple 10-0 lead. This had South Africa in control of the game, and despite a penalty from Owen Farrell to put England on the scoreboard, they went in 13-6 behind at the break.
The second half was a lively affair and England rallied from two tries from David Wilson. Ben Morgan levelled the game after Cobus Reinach had increased the lead for South Africa. From then on it was anyone’s match but South Africa showed their power and veteran flanker Schalk Burger gained a try and the initiative for the visitors. After that it was a case of controlling the game and despite a late Brad Barritt try, the Springboks held on.
