chaiteaThis story pretty much writes itself. A man in India has been arrested for drinking tea suspiciously. Not sure if that is even logically possible unless he was doing the cartoonish shifting eyes from side to side, whilst stroking his evil cat and carrying a devilish smile. Maybe then but until all those occur simultaneously, its best to assume he was just drinking tea.

Vijay Patil was having what is commonly known as “cutting chai”; the act of having a quick break of a half glass of tea at a stall in Kolhapur. Makes the story even more baffling since his behaviour s so commonplace it has a unique term. The suspect in question was approached by a sub-inspector Jadhav after observing his fishy behaviour. Unsatisfied by Vijay’s reasoning, he placed him under arrest which he was apparently well within his rights to do as a preventative measure against people he suspects on the verge of committing a crime.

The case reached the Bombay high court who afforded us some common sense. The judge proclaimed:

“One might take tea in a variety of ways, not all of them always elegant or delicate, some of the perhaps even noisy. But we know of no way to drink tea ‘suspiciously'”

On a positive note this may act as future tourist insight into India and tea drinking etiquette. Even though Mr Patil was said to have been familiar to the police force, it was not enough to convince the judge otherwise and Mr Patil was granted freedom to continue his reign of terror.
