Week 12 of the season and Man City were the main beneficiaries as far as the title race is concerned. The Champions 5-0 thrashing of Villa, coupled with away defeats for Man United and Chelsea meant that the blue half of Manchester was smiling as City returned to the summit once more.
City had started the game poorly, but a scrambled goal from David Silva just before half time settled the home sides nerves, and a contentious penalty decision early in the second really put Villa to the sword. After the linesman had outrageously flagged for handball, the ref gave the spot kick and Aguero did not miss, tucking the ball away expertly. Three later goals added gloss to the score line, with City looking something like their imperious best from last season.
This result meant that Man United knew they had to beat Norwich at Carrow Road in the late kick off to return to the top of the table. But the Canaries had other ideas and took the game to them right from the first whistle, with United not looking at their cutthroat best throughout. And after Pilkington headed in a wonderful looping header against his old club early in the second half, Norwich held out for a famous 1-0 victory.
Man City would of course have snapped anyone’s hand off if you had offered them the two results from the Manchester clubs, but any positive result for West Brom at home to
Chelsea would have been even better. And with Chelsea out of form recently, along with the fact that the home side were remarkably in the top five, the result was not a surprise. A 2-1 defeat for the Blues meant that West Brom finished the weekend in a Champions League spot, leaving Chelsea to lick their wounds ahead of a season defining game away to Juventus next week.
The other big game of the weekend was the North London derby between Arsenal and Spurs, and who would have bet on a repeat score line from last season? A 5-2 triumph back then was somehow replicated, even after Spurs had taken the lead through Adebayor. The striker though showed his dark side five minutes later with a reckless red card, changing the game and playing into Arsenal’s hands.
In other games this weekend, Reading registered their first win of the season with a 2-1 win over Everton, however QPR still await their first after lost 3-1 to Southampton, with many fans calling for the managers head after the game. Newcastle’s slump continued with a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea, and Liverpool won 3-0 against Wigan.
