It’s one blistering success after another for Sydney FC since the signing of Italian legend Alessandro del Piero. Record crowds, goals galore, and shirt sales through the roof – the whole deal has been an unprecedented success. It’s just a shame the team’s shit.
A crowd of 35,419 poured into Allianz Stadium to see the former Juventus star take on Newcastle in their second game of the season – which was a record for a regular game involving Sydney FC, even before their ‘derby’ game against Western Sydney the following week. And the fans who showed up were rewarded with a five-goal thriller as well as Del Piero’s first goal of the season. Unfortunately it was also the team’s second successive defeat, but you can’t have everything.
Stadium officials reported the highest-ever spending at the stadium’s official store in the ground’s 21-year history, beating even the NRL grand finals held there between 1988 and 1998.
Hilariously, the club’s CEO Tony Pignata could not contain his delight at watching the club’s coffers being filled, blatantly not giving a shit about the fact his side had just lost.
“The key thing is to build on this and make sure it’s not a one-game wonder,” he said after the Newcastle game. “Result aside, we hope people at the game had an experience like never before and will keep coming back for more. It was a great game with five goals, and hopefully the next time the result will go in our favour. People were saying to me afterwards, ‘thank you for bringing him to the club’, and telling me they’d be back.”
Yes Tony, they were probably Newcastle fans.
