Of the many, many mindless things Americans say on a regular basis, the phrase “I don’t give a rat’s ass” has always been more baffling than most.
Why a rat, for starters? And why it’s ass?
But the phrase hit a little too close to home for a bloke in Ireland, who sat down on the toilet to “drop the kids off at the pool” last month and ended up having his cheeky side bitten by a rat. The local council, in Middleton, County Cork, is now warning people to watch their asses when they use the loo to prevent it from happening again. It’s believed the rat got in through a broken sewer pipe. “The flooding resulted in another problem for residents, that of rat infestation, which really upset many families, mentally and physically, and indeed, one elderly gentleman suffered a rat bite to his posterior while using his toilet, and had to receive immediate medical attention,” said councillor Noel Collins.
