It’s your typical ‘Sophie’s Choice’ situation that occured in the friendly football match played out between the United States Women’s team and the Republic of Ireland Women’s team.
Leading up to this bizarre goal, the US team are given a corner so you’d expect a routine set up from both teams but one Ireland out-field player decides to throw caution to the wind with her attempt at clearing the ball. As the corner is swung into the box it lands at the feet of the Irish player and her team-mate, defender Meabh De Burca couldn’t have expected what unfolded to happen.
We have many questions directed toward the goalie, like WHY THE HELL did you feel the need to stop playing and comfort De Burca instead of doing your job and attempt to save the shot?
Lucky for US forward Abby Wambach, with the keeper otherwise distracted by her De Burca’s tumble to the ground Wambach was able to calmly stroke the ball into the back of the net.
