A wizened 49-year-old Japanese footballer has set a new record after becoming the oldest professional player to score in a competitive match.
So chin up Emile Heskey, there’s still time yet for you to crack double figures for career goals.
Former Japan international Kazuyoshi Miura , who despite his longevity has never played in a World Cup, headed Yokohama FC in front in the 22nd minute of their match against FC Gifu in the J-League second division, only to see his side beaten 2-1. Remarkably, this is his 31st season as a pro.
“I’m genuinely happy,” Miura said while donning a pair of dad slippers and slowly becoming more right wing. “Things felt nice during training and I was sensing I could get one. The defeat is the disappointing part. I need to be scoring more, to be honest.”
No Miura, you need to be moaning about “the music of today” and how “kids don’t know how easy they’ve got it”.
