Ireland centre Robbie Henshaw and Wales wing George North have been ruled out of the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand due to injuries they obtained during Tuesday’s match against the Hurricanes.
George North has a hamstring injury while Henshaw has damaged a pectoral muscle; they will leave the tour following Saturday’s second Test in Wellington.
Coach Warren Gatland said, that although the Lions had been “lucky”, “It’s unfortunate with Robbie doing the pectoral muscle, which puts him out so he’s heading back to Ireland – I think he has an operation on Monday… And then George with the hamstring as well. It’s unfortunate for him and his tour is over as well.”
Tuesday’s match, during which the injuries occurred, ended in a 31-31 draw against the New Zealand Hurricanes, arguably as a result of Iain Henderson’s yellow card which allowed the Hurricanes to claw back a 14-point deficit.
