MessiAs the Revelations chapter of the New Testament clearly states, one day the God of Football will descend upon Earth to make love to a goblin. And from that union a footballing messiah will be born. That prophecy came true a quarter of a decade ago with the birth of troll-faced football wizard Lionel Messi. Amen.

And lo the Holy one’s majesty continues to work in mysterious ways, with his disciples making sacrifices to honour his name. In the latest instance, the disciple happens to be a guy called Nicolas Yegros, who has effectively sacrificed his career on the altar of Messi mania. Yegros was fortunate enough to get the best seats in the house to see his idol in action when Argentina took on Chile in last month’s World Cup qualifier. And not only did Yegros get the star to pose on camera with him at half-time and sign an autograph, he also got to run up and down the side of the pitch during the game.

That’s right, Yegros was an assistant referee (or linesman as they should be known), who threw impartiality (and his career) to the wind at the half-time interval by schmoozing up to Messi for the sake of a decent profile picture on Facebook.

A rather bemused Messi granted Yegros his request for the photo as the Paraguayan smiled giddily beside his football idol.

But why would Yegros risk the wrath of FIFA with such a brazenly unprofessional act?

Well according to the South American media it was his last official match in charge and he ‘did not care about any fines or punishment from FIFA. He also got to watch Messi score as he helped Argentina to a 2-1 away win.
