Zero Tolerance for Illegal Vape Sales in Tasmania: Latest Crackdown 2025

Major Blitz Targets Illegal Vapes in Hobart

Tasmania has stepped up its zero-tolerance approach to illegal vape sales, with a two-day blitz in Hobart and surrounding areas. Conducted on 2 and 3 September 2025, the operation led to the seizure of commercial quantities of illegal vaping goods and tobacco from five retail businesses.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Tasmanian Department of Health led the joint operation, which was supported by the Tasmania Police. Businesses were investigated for suspected breaches of the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, which strictly regulates the sale of vaping products in Australia.

Is It Illegal to Vape in Tasmania?

Yes. Under Australia’s world-leading vaping reforms, vaping products can only be supplied through pharmacies and only for smoking cessation or nicotine dependence management. Retailers such as tobacconists, vape shops, and convenience stores cannot legally sell vapes in Tasmania or anywhere in Australia, even with a prescription.

Harsh Penalties for Illegal Vape Sales

Authorities have warned that penalties for selling illegal vapes are severe:

  • Up to $2.31 million in fines for individuals

  • Up to $23.1 million for companies

  • Criminal charges with penalties of up to $1.65 million or seven years imprisonment

These measures reflect the government’s commitment to reducing the availability of harmful vaping products, particularly among young people.

Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Vaping Products

Since the rollout of the government’s reforms in July 2024, enforcement has intensified. Together, the TGA, Australian Border Force (ABF), and state authorities have seized over 12 million illegal vapes worth more than $600 million.

Authorities have confirmed that further blitzes will continue across Tasmania and other states, alongside ongoing border interceptions to prevent illegal products from entering Australia.

Protecting Public Health in Tasmania

The Tasmanian Government is sending a clear message: illegal vapes will not be tolerated. With continued enforcement, substantial penalties, and national collaboration, Tasmania aims to protect the community and uphold Australia’s strict vaping laws.
