Kensington Palace has confirmed that Invictus Games Foundation Patron, Prince Harry, will be in Sydney next month to officially launch the countdown to the 2018 Invictus Games.
The ‘official launch’ of Invictus Games Sydney 2018 will be held on Wednesday, 7 June 2017.
“We look forward to welcoming His Royal Highness Prince Harry in June, to officially launch the countdown to Invictus Games Sydney 2018.
“We are excited to celebrate this special occasion and to show Prince Harry what Sydney has to offer when the Invictus Games heads ‘down under’ next year,” said Lieutenant General Peter Leahy AC, Chair of the Board of Invictus Games Sydney 2018.
The Invictus Games in Sydney in 2018, which also marks the Centenary of the end of World War I, provides a unique opportunity for Australians to commemorate, remember and honour those who serve their country while celebrating the amazing qualities that have underpinned the rehabilitation of so many.
“The Invictus Games will be an important platform to recognise, both active duty personnel and veterans; while generating a broader understanding and respect for them, and the family and friends who support them,” said Lieutenant General Leahy.
“Australians are well known for their love of sport and for looking after their mates – both are qualities that will ensure a wonderful experience for all those who participate in and attend the Invictus Games in Sydney,” said Lieutenant General Leahy.
The events will be staged across Greater Sydney, including Sydney Olympic Park and Sydney Harbour, with 1,000 family and friends expected to accompany the 500 competitors who will travel from 18 nations for eight days of competition from 20 – 27 October 2018.
Founded by Prince Harry, the Invictus Games uses the healing power of sport to positively change the lives of wounded, injured and ill active and veteran servicemen and women. It also celebrates their achievement and determination, and playing a powerful role in their journey to recovery.
During his visit Prince Harry will be briefed on plans for the Games, meet some of Australia’s Invictus Games competitors and join Australia in celebrating the countdown to Invictus Games Sydney 2018.
