Sebastian Vettel created history and added to the plethora of records already under his name at the Indian GP by becoming the youngest driver to win four consecutive titles. Unfortunately, Vettel was unable to maintain his previous record of leading every lap in the Indian GP but that would have been of little concern to him given the history he has made.
Vettel celebrated the feat by entertaining the crowd with some doughnuts (for which he has been reprimanded) and then bowing towards his car to acknowledge its prowess. In the race he had to change up strategies including making an early pit-stop to use a different set of tires. But his masterful display of driving still saw him reach the summit of the pack.
The Driver’s championship was never in any doubt as his closest rival Fernando Alonso limped to a disappointing 11th spot. Alonso has already signalled that the car needs to be stronger if it is to compete with the Red Bull in next year’s competition. Alonso suffered early on as he collided with Mark Webber’s car resulting in a damaged front wing and the need for running repairs.
Webber had a decent start to the race despite the early collision and led the pack on his medium tyres. Vettel had to switch to medium early on and was playing catch up. A game we know he’s good at because by lap 28 he was leading the race. The Red Bull 1-2 only lasted a couple of laps as Webber car had an alternator failure.
Sebastian Vettel’s position had the dual impact of sealing the constructor’s championship too. It’s been a successful year for Red Bull once again and they will welcome Daniel Ricciardo to the team next year.
