Ever since Rene Higuata scorpion-kicked his way into the public consciousness, we Brits have been fascinated by the poodled-haired stars of the Colombian national team.
Remember when Tino Asprilla publicly shafted Darlington by mysteriously disappearing in the shock-transfer-that-never-was a few years ago? Hilarious.
Remember Carlos Valderrama’s “Sideshow Bob” hair at the 1994 World Cup? Crazy!
And what about the time a fan shot and killed Andres Escobar for scoring an own goal at the World Cup?
Okay that wasn’t so amusing, but still, riveting stuff.
With big perms, big egos and the sort of big habits that would keep Breaking Bad’s Walter White in business for a good few years, what’s not to love about Los Campasinos – a nickname which we’ve literally just made up.
It was perhaps inevitable, therefore, that someone in TV land would come up with the idea of doing a show about them – which is the idea behind the show ‘La Seleccion’ – or ‘the national team’.
The show follows the stories Higuita, Valderrama, Asprilla and Freddy Rincon, and how they made their names in the 80s and 90s.
On the pitch, they took Colombia to three consecutive World Cups from 1990-1998, some feat considering they had only once qualified before.
Off the pitch, they dragged their reputations through the mud.
Higuita, for example, may still be known as that mental keeper who did that backflip thing against England – but he’s also been suspended for using cocaine and was briefly imprisoned after taking money to mediate in a kidnapping. Meanwhile, Rincon has been arrested several times for money laundering while Asprilla keeps getting charged on firearm offences.
Suddenly Ryan Giggs shagging Imogen Thomas doesn’t seem so controversial.
