You should never laugh at a sport star getting injured but sometimes you just can’t help yourself. Below are some of the funniest sporting injuries to brighten up your day.
Andy Carroll – Casino stool fall
Many know Andy Carroll as the £35 million soccer striker who failed to live up to his price tag at Liverpool. However, before he moved to Anfield he was known more for his partying antics, but at least he backed them up with goals! After knocking back 30 Jagerbombs with his pals, Carroll managed to fall off his stool, landing on the hard casino floor. Stunned casino-goers – it was at 5.30am so there were not too many – turned to see the big man writhing on the floor clutching his legs and letting out a tirade of expletives. We’re guessing he wasn’t asking how to play blackjack. As a result of his drunken fall, Carroll ended up missing Newcastle’s next two games.
Ryan Klesko – Dinner tray fail
Goodness knows what baseball player Ryan Klesko piled on his plate. Whatever it was it was too much for his poor old back, which he strained after picking up his tray. The Atlanta Braves star was ruled out of action for several games of the 1999 season as a result.
Svein Grondalen – Crossing an angry Moose
Norwegian defender Svein Grondalen was known for his physical style of play in the soccer world and his tackle on Sweden’s Ralf Edstrom was a case in point. However, no matter how strong Grondalen was there was no way that he would take on a charging moose. Sensibly, he chucked himself off a small cliff and rolled to safety. Unfortunately on the tumble down he cut his leg rather badly which ruled him out of Norway’s next World Cup qualifier.
Steve Sparks – Ripping phonebooks
Steve Sparks was a bog-standard knuckleball pitcher who did the rounds in the MLB. It was at his first club, the Milwaukee Brewers, where he wrote himself into injury folklore. He attempted to tear a phonebook in half but he dislocated his shoulder instead.
Joe Sakic – Snowblower faux pas
You would expect a professional ice hockey player to be well versed in using a snowblower. Joe Sakic is hopefully the exception. Sakic was already sidelined with injury when he was pushing his snowblower along, unfortunately he did not read the manual as he stuck his hand inside it to remove excess snow. The consequence was three broken fingers, surgery and a further three months on the sidelines.
Rio Ferdinand – Taking it too easy
Former England captain Rio Ferdinand announced last year that this will be his last season in football. The defender has a storied career, winning nearly everything there is to win in club football but there are few things he would like to be wiped off the slate, including the whole drug test episode and his hilarious injury fail. Back in his Leeds days, Rio was chilling at home with his feet on the coffee table. When he removed them four hours later he discovered he had strained a tendon in his knee!
