Being handed a 5-0 shellacking is never fun for football fans. But being handed a 5-0 shellacking from the worst top-flight team in Europe, who had only won once in their previous 24 games before the match (and they only won that one as a sanction against their opponents who fielded an ineligible player), all proved a bit too much for Genoa fans.
A mob of about 100 jumped-up Genoans decided to let their frustrations out on the players by attacking the team’s bus once they had landed back home at the local airport. The club’s manager was sacked shortly after.
On the flipside, things are looking up (sort of) for the team that beat them – although that’s hardly difficult. In the week before the game, Pescara were in freefall following thrashings by Lazio and Torino and an arson attack on their president’s private property. In desperation, they fired manager Massimo Oddo and hired Zdenek Zeman – who is now being hailed a hero after the remarkable start to his tenure. Funny how fortunes can change so quickly.
