Sometimes it’s your mum recounting everything she bought in the supermarket, sometimes it’s a mate banging on about his achievements in Football Manager – whatever the reason, we’ve all got out of a crap conversation by pretending to be on the phone.
And that’s what Bayern Munich ace Thomas Muller thought he’d do rather than face a barrage of questions from reporters as speculation about his future at the club grows. Trouble is, he didn’t have his phone on him – so in a MacGyver-style flash of inspired improvisation, he instead pressed his passport against his ear and spoke to that as he walked by, hoping no would notice.
Alas, his plan was foiled by the fact that a passport looks nothing like a mobile phone, so the media just followed him in an attempt to grab an insight into his immediate future. Muller refused to give up the ruse though, chatting away to his passport as he made it to the sanctuary of the team bus. Well played sir. Unless, of course, it wasn’t a ruse at all and Muller is just mentally ill, in which case someone should probably give him the number of a psychiatrist pronto.
