South Africa suffer while England enjoy a perfect 2016 in rugby union.
In rugby union, South Africa suffered their own humiliation as they were beaten 20-18 by Italy in an Autumn international. To put this into perspective, this was the first time Italy had beaten the Springboks in 13 attempts. In fact, dating back to 1995 Italy had lost the previous 12 encounters with South Africa all by 16 points or more.
This was the latest in a string of poor performances by South Africa having suffered their heaviest home loss at the hands of New Zealand (15-57), only drawing with the Barbarians and losing 37-21 to England. Meanwhile, England capped off a winning Autumn and a perfect 2016 with a 37-21 defeat of Australia at Twickenham.
This followed the Six Nations triumph, beating Wales, the 3-0 test series rout of Australia down under and the wins at home against South Africa, a 58-15 demolition of Fiji and a tight 27-14 battle over Argentina. The success can largely be traced to the new manager Eddie Jones, an Australian, sweet.
