SIR Alex Ferguson has gotten the build-up to the new Premier League campaign officially under way after delivering his traditional pre-season jibe at Liverpool.
The purple-nosed Scotch pensioner decided to go for a classic dig to kick things off, reprising the much-loved “Evra race row” debate and claiming it was the main reason Kenny Dalglish was sacked.?”I wasn’t surprised at Kenny leaving,” he tartaned. “Their owner, John Henry, has obviously looked at that (incident) and felt it wasn’t handled in the right way. It certainly wasn’t a nice thing to happen and it must have been part of it.”?Presumably the fact that Liverpool spent a squajillion pounds on players and finished eighth didn’t help Dalglish’s cause either. ?But the real question is why Ferguson is even bothering trying to stir up trouble at Liverpool when they’re perfectly capable of doing it themselves.
A ball hasn’t even been kicked yet and they’ve already been forced into a U-turn following their pursuit of Fulham’s Clint Dempsey. At the time of going to print, Fulham were still trying to keep hold of the midfielder – but that didn’t stop Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports, claiming on their website that the deal was done.?An article titled “Liverpool gear up for North American Tour as Clint Dempsey joins club” had to be swiftly removed as Liverpool fans across the world logged on for details of the deal.
As the news began to spread, furious Fulham were forced to issue a statement confirming Dempsey was not on his way to Anfield. ?”‘It is totally not true.
