BBM would like to be the first to congratulate England on their successful defence of the Ashes.
With scandal-machine David Warner taking the latest controversy on the chin, Michael Clarke’s back cracking under the strain of carrying the team and Australia’s form as patchy as Shane Warne’s original hair, the Ashes series is as good as won. So three cheers for the boys! Hip hip huzzah!
But let’s be honest, singing England’s praises isn’t half as much fun as kicking the Aussies while they’re down. For a while there we were starting to worry, especially after England made such hard work of polishing off New Zealand in back to back Test series. But it doesn’t matter how badly England fare, the Aussies always manage to go one lower. It’s not nice laughing at other people’s misfortunes, but when Clarke crocked his back again we almost wept with joy. Warner’s subsequent implosion was the humorous icing on the comedy cake.
But all is not lost for the Aussies, at least that’s what one-eyed fool Allan Border believes, claiming the current team can channel the spirit of the Australian 1989 side – who were also a bit a shit, but somehow won the Ashes.
“We suffered the same thing in ’89 and it was a great motivational tool for me and the senior guys to cut out these headlines that we were the worst team ever and post them around the dressing room,” Border said. “It was a good spur for a team that was an underdog and written off, it was not hard to motivate people under those circumstances.”
Sadly for Border, Australia are led by Clarke – a man to whom motivation means pissing off to the Taj Mahal with his wife while the rest of the side endure the worst tour of India in decades.
