We know Americans are unpopular at the minute after voting in a mad gibbon as president, but Charlton Athletic may have taken things a tad far – after punching an American eagle.
Crystal Palace mascot Kayla was punched in the beak by mad Addicks fan Daniel Boylett when violence broke out between the two sets of fans in 2015. And while that might seem like a while ago, the cogs of British justice turn so slowly he’s only just gone to trial.
Kayla’s handler Chris Belsey was walking the bird of prey around the Selhurst Park pitch when a punch was thrown from the crowd, the jury heard. “As he passed the stand he noticed three or four fans were shouting abuse and one of these three or four lent over the barrier and threw a punch directed at Kayla,” prosecutor Daniel Higgins said. “Mr Belsey is unsure if the punch directed at the eagle had landed.”
Sounds like he probably just winged him.
