England finished Group B on five points, one point behind its neighbour Wales. It has been an average start for the English, which drew 1—1 with Russia, came from behind to beat Wales 2—1 and drew with Slovakia in its opening three matches.
Under Roy Hodgson, England have still not managed to settle on a starting line-up and formation, and made six changes for the final group match against Slovakia. The English FA have reportedly expressed its concern about his selections in the tournament so far.
The positives, however, are that England’s young squad have pulled through when needed against Wales, and dominated the matches against Russia and Slovakia. Following the 0—0 draw with Slovakia, Hodgson said it was “frustrating” not to score.
“In each of the three games we’ve been the totally dominant team,” he said. “We’ll be criticised for having so much possession and not scoring goals and I cannot deny that. All I can say is the time will come when we’ll take the chances and some team might be on the end of that fairly soon.”
For the Three Lions fans, it is hoped that time will be in the Round of 16 against minnows Iceland. The match kicks off at 5:00am on Tuesday, 28 June AEST.
