In the battle between bat and ball on the cricket pitch, mental strength can be just as important as physical talent. A good bowler knows he needs to get under the batsman’s skin; to send a message that will rattle his opponent into making a costly error.
Often these attempts to unsettle a batsman are subtle, like Mitchell Johnson staring so hard at Jonathan Trott after another play-and-miss that you can actually see the Saffa-turned-Pom’s soul fracturing under the pressure. However, other bowlers are not so subtle. For example, last month South Australia bowler, Daniel Worrall, attempted to distract his opponents by scratching the outline of a huge cock and balls into the pitch at Toorak Park. Did the controversial technique work? Not really – Worrall was immediately suspended for either two four-day matches, or four one-day or Twenty20 games, after “bringing the game into disrepute”.
“Worrall scratched an image of a penis and testicles into a wicket being prepared for a grade cricket final that coming weekend,” SA Cricket’s high performance manager Jamie Cox said.
“We are extremely disappointed in Daniel’s actions, it’s not in line with the behaviour we expect of a Redbacks player.
“We do believe this is out of character for Daniel. He regrets his behaviour and has accepted the penalty.”
The 22-year-old paceman pleaded guilty to the charge but did not agree with the penalty, which led to a hearing. Unfortunately for Worrall, the original penalty was upheld and the he will be made to serve his suspension at the start of next summer.
SA Cricket refused to comment when asked if Worrall had scratched the words “SA Cricket is gay IDST” into his table at the hearing.
