The tournament saw Britain’s Andy (never to be referred to as Scottish after his success at Wimbledon) Murray winning in straight sets against Japan’s Go Soeda.
Battling in unfamiliar soaring temperatures at Melbourne Park, Murray picked up the easy win in his first grand-slam game after returning from back surgery. No fears regarding the match, really, when up against the world’s 112 ranked Soeda. Our main worry was that Murray would have to be mopped off the court having melted in 43 degree heat recorded and that was with the roof.
Speaking after his victory “It was my first grand slam game since back surgery so I was taking nothing for granted. I am really happy to win in straight sets.
“When you haven’t played for a while you are pretty stressed out before the match and nervous to know how the back is going to respond. But it felt good today so hopefully I will wake up tomorrow with no after effects of the match, but it has been a good start for me so hopefully I can keep going.”
British fans can finally have something worth cheering about in Aus, after witnessing the appalling Ashes loss this winter with one fan tweeting, “Andy Murray has done more in an hour and a half than the England cricket team has done in two months”
Acknowledging his die hard fans Murray said, “I always get good support here. It is a tournament I have come close at in the past with three finals and a semi-final as well.”
Murray’s win sees him through to the next round to face a bigger test, in the form of Montpellier born Vincent Millot. The ranked No. 267 offers a David vs Goliath draw with the Frenchman being, like us, a vertically challenged man offering the 6ft 2 Murray what should be a 5ft 8 inch walk in the park.
